HC Deb 28 October 1982 vol 29 cc515-6W
Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many staff worked at the National Engineering Laboratory and the National Physical Laboratory, not including those transferred to the National Maritime Institute, in each of the years from 1970 to date; and to what extent these numbers have been up to approved complement.

Mr. Butcher

The following table shows the numbers of non-industrial staff for which financial provision was made and the staff actually in post at NEL and NPL from 1 April 1971 to 1 October 1982. Figures for 1 April 1970 are not readily available.

Until 1980 separate figures for industrial staff by individual research establishments were not kept. Numbers of staff at the National Physical Laboratory engaged before 1976 on work transferred to the National Maritime Institute cannot be separately identified. However, at 1 June 1976 there were 1,052 non-industrial staff at the National Physical Laboratory, and at 1 July 1976 861½non-industrial staff at the NPL and 187½non-industrial staff at the National Maritime Institute.
