HC Deb 28 October 1982 vol 29 cc499-500W
Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many of the 1,900 increase in doctors and dentists in the National Health Service between 1979 and 1981, and how many of the 34,000 increase in National Health Service nurses and midwives in that period, were planned and started on their training before May 1979.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

No forecasts of staff numbers of the type requested had been made before May 1979. The increases referred to are the result of the Government's increases in expenditure in real terms on the NHS. The Government are now introducing a greatly improved system of manpower planning and control into the service.
