HC Deb 28 October 1982 vol 29 c507W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) if he will take steps to ensure that meat is not sold as a whole meal article if it has been restructured or reformed or if any nitrogenous substance or proteolytic enzyme has been added;

(2) if he will take steps to ensure that all added water or curing solution in curing meats is declared especially if the added amount exceeds 10 per cent. of the total product;

(3) if the regulations governing meat products will be amended to ensure that quantities of connective tissue in meat products do not exceed 10 per cent. of the total as is recommended by the Food Standards Committee;

(4) if he will ensure that currently illegal practice will not be legitimised by his proposed changes in the regulations governing the labelling or preparation of meat products.

Mrs. Fenner

I am considering all these points in relation to proposals for new meat products regulations, following comments from interested parties. I intend to issue revised proposals, and to invite further comment, before any regulations are laid before Parliament.
