§ Mr. Stallardasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list (a)the number of taxpayers aged 75 years and over, the number of these which are couples and the numbers of single, widowed and divorced women, (b)the numbers of taxpayers aged over 75 years who get the full age allowance, (c) the number of taxpayers who get a reduced age allowance and (d) the cost to the Exchequer of the age allowance for those aged over 75 years.
§ Mr. Ridley:I regret that information on which to base estimates of the numbers of taxpayers aged 75 or over is not available. The total number of taxpayers receiving a reduced age allowance in 1982–83 is estimated at 180,000, counting married couples as one.
