§ Mr. Bowen Wellsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps have been taken to improve police training since the Scarman report 1981; and if he will make a statement.
279W
§ Mr. Whitelaw:police training is continually being improved. The Police Training Council, which advises me on such matters, has considered Lord Scarman's recommendations and has established working parties to consider, in detail, probationer training and community and race relations training, and to conduct in-house reviews of training in public order and in supervision and management. At its next meeting on 27 October it will assess the progress of all this work and consider what further action is required. All concerned are well aware of the need to make progress as quickly as possible.
