§ Sir Patrick Wallasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether any of the air force officers or airmen detained in Zimbabwe have British passports; and what representation he has made over the alleged torture of some officers.
§ Mr. Rifkind:Of the seven Zimbabwean Air Force officers who are still detained, the following are known to hold British passports: Air Commodore P. V. Pile, Wing Commander J. R. Cox, Flight Lieutenant Barrington Lloyd and Flight Lieutenant N. A. Weir.
Of the six detained but subsequently released, one, Sergeant J. Lochran, is a mono-British citizen. In his case the British High Commission has made a formal protest to the Zimbabwean authorities concerning his ill-treatment whilst in detention.
All of those currently in detention are Zimbabwean citizens. We have, however, made it clear to the Zimbabwe Government that we are aware of these serious allegations of torture and expressed our concern that all detainees should be treated humanely and brought to trial as soon as possible.
