HC Deb 20 October 1982 vol 29 cc146-7W
26. Mr. Lennox-Boyd

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the situation on the west bank of the river Jordan.

Mr. Hurd

Tension remains high on the West Bank, as in all the territories occupied by Israel since 1967, as a result of the failure to make progress towards a peaceful settlement of the problems of the area.

We remain concerned at the dismissal from their posts of the legally elected Mayor of Gaza and of the Mayors of eight other towns on the West Bank. We regard the programme of Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal and a major obstacle to peace.
