§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will call for a report on the circumstances in which, on Friday 6 August 1982 the police were observed to pay £254 costs in fares by travelling by air instead of rail or road when fetching a woman social security offender from Scotland to face trial at Warley, West Midlands; and whether this sum of £254 will actually be paid by the police in accordance with the court's decision and not from taxpayers or public funds.
§ Mr. MayhewThe chief constable of the West Midlands police has provided my right hon. Friend with a report which demonstrates that this method of transport was in fact most economical. The sum in question will be paid from the police fund.
