asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many persons in each of the years 1979 and 1980 (a) were granted a free pardon under the Royal Prerogative, (b) had their convictions quashed by the Court of Appeal following a reference to that court by the Home Secretary. (c) were released before they had served their sentences because the Home Secretary was of the opinion that there was a serious doubt about their guilt, (d) were detained in custody on a charge which was subsequently withdrawn, (e) were detained in custody on a charge of which they were subsequently acquitted by a jury on the direction of a judge. (f) were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment by a magistrates' court or a Crown Court, but the conviction was subsequently quashed on appeal.
