asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many reception centres and resettlement units there are; what are the total number of beds; and how many (a) men and (b) women by age used them in the last year for which figures are available.

There are 23 resettlement units of which eight are in London. The total number of beds available each night is 2,482. During the period 1 July 1981 to 30 June 1982 the total number of beds occupied was 634,964–10,357 women and 624,607 men. Information about the numbers of individual men and women included in these figures, and their ages, could be provided only at disproportionate staff cost. However, more detailed information is available for the men and women who used resettlement units on the night of 30 June 1982, viz:
