§ Mr. Norman Atkinsonasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will seek to ensure continuity of the agreement of association originally signed on 24 November 1980 between Cyprus and the European Economic Community; and if he will make a statement on present relations between Cyprus and the European Economic Community.
§ Mr. HurdThe European Community/Cyprus association agreement was originally signed on 19 December 1972. The second stage of the agreement is aimed at the progressive removal of trade barriers between Cyprus and the Community. As a step towards this, member States

We should have liked the mandate to be more generous, but had to accept that it was the best that could be secured. We shall continue to do our best to ensure that the Community lives up to its contractual obligations to Cyprus.
