§ Mr. McMahonasked the Prime Minister in what circumstances vessels carrying atomic waste may dock in a shipyard in a populous area; and what precautions are taken to guarantee the health of those working in the yard and of those living in the vicinity.
§ The Prime MinisterBefore entering a shipyard, any vessel which had been carrying atomic waste would be unloaded and surveyed to detect any significant surface contamination, which would then be cleaned off. Work done on the vessel in the shipyard would be monitored so that any significant underlying contamination which might then become exposed would likewise be detected and removed. Any radioactive waste would be accumulated and disposed of in accordance with the terms of an authorisation granted by the appropriate Environment Department. Workers involved would be given appropriate training in the precautions necessary to prevent personal contamination.
