§ The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Elton)The maximum number of prisoners held overnight in police custody since July 1981 was 293, on the night of 8th September 1982. Remand prisoners have normally constituted the majority of those held in police and court cells, but the information held centrally does not identify remand prisoners separately.
