§ Mr. Russell Johnstonasked the Secretary of State for Transport whether the tests on the impact of two television commercials designed to make drivers more aware of cyclists on the roads have been evaluated; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. ChalkerYes. During the period of the campaigns in the Anglia Television area in 1980 and the London Television area in 1981 cycling casualties in the areas concerned fell by 18 per cent. and 14 per cent., respectively, compared with the previous years. In other regions where no campaign was run, there were either smaller reductions or increases in casualties. I believe that the campaigns have been both valuable and effective.
