§ Mr. Bidwellasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what research he has carried out into the acid content in rainfall in various parts of the United Kingdom; and what steps are taken to counteract injurious effects.
§ Mr. Giles ShawThe acidity of rainfall is being monitored at four sites in the United Kingdom. An interim report on the results of these measurements, prepared by the acid rain review group, was issued in June. An increase in the number of sites is currently under consideration. My Department is also funding research into the possible effects of acid rain. However, there is no evidence at present to suggest that the levels of air pollution, including acid rain, experienced in this country are having serious or widespread effects on the environment.
