HC Deb 11 November 1982 vol 31 c267W
Mr. Stainton

asked the Secretary of State for Transport by how many have the numbers of traffic examiners to eliminate tachograph chart frauds in Felixstowe and surrounding districts been increased recently; and if this area will be allocated priority for the installation of computerised equipment to detect other offences such as the use of a ghost driver record.

Mr. Eyre

The total complement of traffic examiners employed by the Department has recently been increased from 210 to 225. Recruitment is in hand to fill existing vacancies, including one in Eastern traffic area. The team of traffic examiners which covers the Felixstowe area has been increased by one. Four officers are employed on the full range of enforcement duties, including tachograph regulations. The Department is conducting an experiment on the use of computerised equipment for reading tachograph charts for enforcement purposes which is nearing completion. If the outcome is favourable arrangements will be made to introduce the equipment in all traffic areas.
