Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what would be the cost of (a) abolition of the non-domestic rate, (b) a reduction of 10 per cent. in the non-domestic rate and (c) the abolition of water and sewerage charges to households not engaged in commercial activity.

Mr. King

[pursuant to his reply, 10 November 1982, c. 192.]: The estimated costs for the current financial year in respect of England and Wales would be approximately as follows:

  1. (a) £6,250 million for the abolition of the non-domestic rate;
  2. (b) £625 million for 10 per cent non-domestic rate relief; and
  3. (c) £1,200 million for the abolition of domestic water and sewerage charges.
