HC Deb 11 November 1982 vol 31 c211W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what recent representations he has received supporting the introduction of full local government for Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Prior

Since 1 August I have received three letters in favour of giving greater powers to local authorities in Northern Ireland. I have considered carefully the case for increasing the powers of local government in Northern Ireland, but remain of the view that the best prospect for peace and stability there lies in the resumption of devolved government on a basis acceptable to both sides of the community.
