HC Deb 26 May 1982 vol 24 cc349-50W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish in the Official Report an analysis by duration of unemployment, by number and percentage, at the latest available date for Dundee in respect of the following groups (a) up to six months, (b) over six months and up to one year, (c) over one year and up to two years, (d) over two years and up to three years and (e) over three years; and what are the comparable figures for Scotland.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The information is set out in the following table:

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Information is not available in the precise form requested. On 15 April 1982, 1,035 young people under the age of 18 years, 303 young people aged 18 years and 273 people aged 19 and over who had not been in employment since completing full-time education were registered as unemployed in Dundee. Because information is not available for the year in which these people left school, it is not possible to express the numbers registered as a meaningful percentage of the total number of school leavers.

Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give figures to show the total number of redundancies notified each year in Dundee for the years 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981 and for the year 1982 to date.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The numbers of redundancies reported to the Manpower Services Commission as due to occur in Dundee in each year since 1977 are set out in the following table. These include redundancies leading to closure. The figures are not comprehensive. In particular, they exclude redundancies affecting fewer than 10 employees.

Year Redundancies reported in Dundee

1978 1,600
1979 705
1980 3,938
1981 2,956
