Mr. Litherland

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the percentage unemployment rate in the construction industry in Manchester; and how many craftsmen in each of the respective trades are unemployed.

At August 1981, the latest date for which an industrial analysis is available, the rate of unemployment in the construction industry in the Manchester travel-to-work area was 29.4 per cent. A further industrial analysis of the unemployed was made on 13 May 1982 and the results will be available in early June.

The following table gives for October 1981, the last date for which an analysis was made, the numbers of unemployed people registered at employment offices in the Manchester travel-to-work area for employment in skilled construction occupations.
