HC Deb 20 May 1982 vol 24 c150W
Mr. David Steel

asked the Minister for Trade (1) what progress has been made on the code now being established by his Department to monitor the labelling of goods.

(2) if, in considering the code for the labelling of garments, he will make it obligatory for the origin of the material to be specified, on any label attached to the garment itself; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Vaughan

The new origin marking order came into effect on 1 January, and I shall be keeping its operation under careful review. But as explained in last year's debate on the order in Standing Committee, it would be difficult to extend it to the origin of fabric in garments.
