§ Mr. Allen McKayasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if, in view of the declining population of the African elephant, he will ban the import of all ivory goods into the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. MacfarlaneNo. In accordance with the Washington convention on international trade in endangered species, licences under the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act 1976 for importations of African ivory are issued provided that there is proof that the acquisition of the goods in the country of origin and their exportation from it were legal.
