§ Mr. MayhewThe grant is designed to meet a discharged prisoner's reasonable needs for his maintenance during his first week after release. While the standard grant of £21.15 is considered to be sufficient to meet the immediate requirements of those returning home, homeless ex-prisoners are judged to need additional financial help, and they receive a higher grant of £50.85. The introduction of a flat-rate grant would not therefore be consistent with the objects of the scheme.
