§ Sir John Biggs-Davisonasked the Secretary of State for Defence what arrangements are made for the replacement, when necessary, of the Union flag raised by Royal Marines on Rockall in 1955.
§ Mr. RifkindI have been asked to reply.
70WA flag can withstand the weather conditions on Rockall for only a very short time. A plaque was therefore also placed on the rock in 1955. A new plaque was erected in 1971 and was still in position when the island was last visited. It will be checked and, if necessary, replaced when the light is next inspected, probably later this year.
