HC Deb 17 May 1982 vol 24 cc47-8W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the effect on operations in the south Atlantic of reports and discussion in the mass media of the composition, equipment, movement, activities and tactical options of the task force; and whether use is being made of D-notices.

Mr. Blaker

While the Government understand the need for public discussion on the operations in the South Atlantic, it is clearly important that this should be carried out in a responsible manner. Revised D-notices were issued to the media at the end of March by the defence press and broadcasting committee—composed of four Government officials and media representatives; a copy was placed in the Library. They are obviously relevant to the current operations and advice is given accordingly.
