§ Mr. MayhewThere is no central record of the number of unpaid fines. However, on 31 December 1981, the latest date for which figures are available, the amount of unpaid fines outstanding in England and Wales, excluding inner London, was £37,556,000, to the nearest £1,000. An unknown proportion of this sum consists of fines in respect of which the time allowed for payment had not expired.
