HC Deb 10 May 1982 vol 23 cc202-3W
Mr. Ron Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, how many girls in Scotland received training under the youth opportunities programme in 1981; and how many have subsequently secured permanent employment.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

In the year from 1 April 1981 to 31 March 1982, 70,000 young people entered the youth opportunities programme in Scotland. Although precise information on the sex of entrants is not available, an analysis suggests that boys and girls enter the programme in approximately equal numbers. The most recent sample survey carried out in October-November 1981 indicated that 45 per cent. of the young people who had joined the programme in Scotland between July and September 1980 obtained permanent jobs and a further 9 per cent. entered full-time education or training; the results were not however analysed by sex.
