HC Deb 10 May 1982 vol 23 cc207-8W
Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the percentage unemployment rate in the construction industry in Glasgow; and how many craftsmen in each of the respective trades are unemployed.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

[pursuant to his reply, 27 April 1982, c. 270]: In August 1981, the latest date for which information is available, the number of people registered as unemployed in the Glasgow travel-to-work area who last worked in the construction industry represented 31.6 per cent. of the construction industry labour force in the area. The percentage is based on the 1977 census of employment and is subject to revision when later census results become available.

The following table gives the numbers of unemployed people, last employed in the construction industry, who were registered at employment offices in the Glasgow travel-to-work area for work in each of the building trades listed in October 1981, the latest date for which information is available.
