HC Deb 10 May 1982 vol 23 c181W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many young people in (a) Wolverhampton and (b) the West Midlands have had no full-time job since leaving school; and what proportion of all school leavers this represents in each case.

Mr. Alison

At 15 April the provisional numbers of unemployed young people under 18 years of age who had not entered employment since completing full-time education in the Wolverhampton employment office area and in the West Midlands region were 917 and 14,264 respectively.

I am informed by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science that in the academic year September 1980 to August 1981—the latest information available—the provisional number of school leavers in the West Midlands was 85,440 but that a separate figure for Wolverhampton is not available.
