§ Mr. MayhewBetween the end of April 1980 when the scheme began, and 31 March 1982, about 3,500 young offenders ordered to be detained in a detention centre had been received into centres operating the tougher regimes pilot project. Information on sentencing thoughout this period is not yet available, but during the period April-December 1980, a detention centre order was given to 7 per cent. of males aged 14 and under 21 sentenced for indictable offences by magistrates' courts or the Crown court in the committal areas for Send or New Hall.
