HL Deb 04 May 1982 vol 429 c1152WA
Lord Brockway

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the National Trust has agreed to allow the Ministry of Defence to build the underground bunker on its land at Naphill near High Wycombe; whether this is not contradictory to its obligation to maintain natural beauty; whether a meeting of its members is to be held to endorse or reverse its decision; whether the Trust was given the Bradenham estate on which the land lies on condition that it would not dispose of it without the permission of Parliament; and whether Parliament will be given an opportunity to discuss the issue.

Viscount Trenchard

A lease and licence have been concluded with the National Trust for the use of the land at Naphill for the construction of an underground operations centre. The other substantive points raised in the question are all matters for the National Trust. The issue has been raised in Parliament already, most recently when the noble Lord asked an unstarred Question on 25th March 1982.
