HC Deb 30 March 1982 vol 21 c82W
39. Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the latest figures for unemployment in the Hull travel-to-work area; how this compares with May 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alison

In March 1982 the provisional number of people registered as unemployed in the Hull travel-to-work area was 27,340 compared with 14,300 in May 1979. The figures include school leavers and are not seasonally adjusted.

The Government's policies are aimed at developing a soundly based economy which means, among other things, bringing down inflation. As this is achieved, and productivity continues to improve, British firms will become increasingly competitive. This is the only way to create new and secure jobs not only in Hull but throughout the country.
