§ Mr. WhitelawThe increases from 1 September each year in the basic pay of police officers below the rank of assistant chief constable were 13.5 percent. in 1979, 21.3 per cent. in 1980 and 13.2 per cent. in 1981. The average annual increases in the retail prices index were 13.4 per cent, in 1979, 18 percent. in 1980 and 11.9 per cent. in 1981.
