HL Deb 18 March 1982 vol 428 c827WA
Lord Houghton of Sowerby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether any qualifications, gained by training, efficiency-testing or experience are required of a Mohammedan slaughterman before a licence is granted to him to slaughter animals according to the Mohammedan method comparable with the requirements imposed upon Jewish slaughtermen by Section 36(3)((a)) of and Schedule 1 to the Slaughterhouses Act 1974.

The Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Earl Ferrers)

A licence may only be issued to a slaughterman who, in the opinion of the local authority, is a fit and proper person to hold one. No special conditions are laid down for the granting of a licence to a Moslem slaughterman.
