asked the Secretary of State for Employment in what circumstances confidential personal information held by his Department is supplied to other Departments of State.

Mr. Waddington

Confidential personal information is not supplied to other Departments except:

  1. (a) with the consent of the person concerned;
  2. (b) when it is clearly required for the exercise of statutory functions or safeguarding public funds. There is exchange of information with the Department of Health and Social Services in connection with unemployment and supplementary benefits and with the Inland Revenue for the purpose of taxation of unemployment benefits; and
  3. (c) in connection with the investigation of serious crime.
