HC Deb 05 March 1982 vol 19 cc265-7W
Mr. Austin

Mitchell asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will publish in the Official Report a table showing (a) the United Kingdom price of barley, maize, feed-wheat and bread-making wheat and (b) the price on exportation from Australia, Canada and the United States of America.

Maize 131.50 not available not available 63.29

from other member States and from third countries whose trade is not given a preferential advantage in the EEC market.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

The information requested could not be provided for each of the processed and unprocessed products to which export restitutions apply under the common agricultural policy except at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Austin Mitchell asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will publish in the Official Report a table showing for each commodity and manufacturers thereof the total of export restitutions, net of export taxes, on surpluses dumped in third countries in each of the past five years together with the value of the goods exported under these arrangements.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

The following table gives details of restitutions paid on export of commodities from the European Community to third countries over the period 1977 to 1981. The figures are net of any export charges due to monetary adjustments but not of export levies as such. Information on the corresponding value of the goods is not available.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

Available prices for the week ending 12 February are set out in the following table. Third country export prices are not directly comparable with United Kingdom prices as they do not include the cost of transport to the United Kingdom. The prices also differ in part because of quality.

United Kingdom Australia (fob East Coast) Canada (fob St. Lawrence) United States (all except barley fob Gulf)
Feed wheat 109.00 not available not available not available
Bread wheat 119.20 90.33 110.89 94.12
(ASW)* (CWRS)* (HRW)*
Notes:
* ASW = Australian Standard White
CWRS = No. 1 Canadian Western Red Spring 13.5 per cent.
HRW = Hard Red Winter

  1. 1. United Kingdom prices are average ex-farm prices reported by the Home-Grown Cereals Authority for the week ending Thursday 11 February, for delivery in February, except for maize where the price is for Community-grown maize landed on the United Kingdom west coast.
  2. 2. Freight rates to the United Kingdom for cargoes of 30,000 tonnes at mid-February were about £5 per tonne from US/Canada and £10 per tonne from Australia.
  3. 3. Export prices for the week ending 12 February are taken from the International Wheat Council's market report for 25 February. Prices have been converted from US dollars to sterling per tonne at the spot rate on 12 February (£1 = 1.84875 US dollars).
