§ 39. Sir Anthony Meyerasked the Secretary of State for Employment what conclusions he was able to draw from his personal inspection of the scheme at Cammell Laird's shipyard, Birkenhead, where young workers on the youth opportunities programme are building longboats for use by mentally and physically handicapped young people.
§ Mr. TebbitI very much enjoyed my visit to Cammell Laird's shipyard to see the scheme set up by the company. I was impressed by the breadth of skills that young people are learning on the scheme. I concluded that it demonstrated how such companies can undertake very worthwhile projects under the youth opportunities programme.
§ 49. Mr. Hal Millerasked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he is satisfied with the time taken from receipt of an application from an employer to place a young person under the youth opportunities programme.
§ Mr. Peter MorrisonI am satisfied that the delay between receipt of a sponsor's application and the placing of a young person on a scheme is kept to a minimum and can be a little as four weeks.
§ Mr. David Watkinsasked the Secretary of State for Employment if, further to his hon. Friend's reply to the hon. Member for Consett on 23 February, he can make any estimate of the percentage of youth opportunities programme places provided in Consett and Stanley in 1981 which developed into permanent jobs; and if he can make any broad estimate of the percentage likely to do so in 1982.
§ Mr. Peter MorrisonI regret the information is not available in this form, and could not be obtained without disproportionate cost. Such statistics as exist are collected only on a national basis.
