HC Deb 02 March 1982 vol 19 cc133-4W
Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what number of people are employed by his Department in ensuring that imports of motor vehicle tyres conform to all necessary safety standards before such tyres are placed on sale in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement;

(2) if he will take steps to ban the import of all tyres into the United Kingdom which do not carry a clearly legible maximum speed marking; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

At the moment, no Departmental staff are employed to check imported tyres before they are sold. I am urgently considering the need for changes in our regulations to require replacement tyres to meet the appropriate international safety standards, which include maximum speed markings.
