asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will publish details of the amounts fixed by his Department for the external financing limits and PSO limits and grants for British Railways for the last three years and for 1982–83 showing the amounts by which these were increased in real terms in each case.

The external financing limits set by this Government have been as follows:

The PSO is on a calendar year basis, and the figures are as follows:

were paid to London Transport, of which some £100 million came from the taxpayer through the transport supplementary grant and rate support grant system.

Transport supplementary grant is a block grant paid by the Government to support expenditure by county councils on transport including roads. For 1982–83 proposed expenditure by the GLC of £403 million was accepted for grant purposes of which about £89 million was in respect of revenue support and about £120 million for capital grant to London Transport. The total amount of TSG to be paid to the GLC in 1982–83 is £181 million. So far, £44.3 million has been paid to the GLC this year.
