HC Deb 25 June 1982 vol 26 c193W
Mr Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many deaths and serious injuries have occurred on farms in each of the past 10 years in the United Kingdom.

Mr Peter Morrison

The following table lists the number of deaths which have occurred as a result of agricultural operations in the United Kingdom during the period 1972–81:

Numbers
1972 119
1973 132
1974 124
1975 117
1976 124
1977 115
1978 87
1979 106
1980 89
1981 87

The figures include a number, believed small, of fatalities arising from industrial diseases contracted on farms in Great Britain. The Northern Ireland element of the figures refers strictly to accidental deaths. Until 1981, records of non-fatal injuries on farms did not specifically distinguish those which involved serious injuries, and in any case related only to employees. The results for 1981 are not yet available.
