§ Mr. Eldon Griffithsasked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how many persons he estimates would be eligible for compensation for noise nuisance if he had not provided the eight lengths of close-boarded fencing along the M11;
(2) how much compensation for noise nuisance he calculates has been saved by the provision of close-boarded fencing along the M11; how much it cost for labour and materials to put up this fencing; and how much he estimates will be required for its maintenance over the next 20 years.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe cost of the fencing was approximately £450,000 at prices current at the time. The cost of maintenance is nominal. It is impossible to estimate accurately how much compensation for depreciation has been saved, or in respect of how many properties, but such savings would have been marginal. The purpose of the fencing is not to save compensation but to mitigate as far as possible the loss of amenity.
