§ The Prime MinisterYes. The Government's recently announced arrangements are part of the IT Year initiatives to promote a national awareness of the advantages of new technology. The application to the work of general practitioners, which is being carried out with the full cooperation and support of representatives of the medical profession, is based partly on the work carried out in these fields by the NHS and partly on commercial developments. British equipment will be used by two companies which have been chosen for their ability to provide the appropriate support required for a large nationwide 281W scheme. For FPCs the objective is to adapt the NHS standard computerised registration system to run on British equipment and details have still to be finalised. The detailed arrangements were the result of the work of a joint working party of DOI, DHSS and representatives of the medical profession.
