§ Mr. Eldon Griffithsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if, in the light of article 12 in the NATO treaty and recent developments in the South Atlantic, he will reconsider the response by his Department to the report of the special working party of the British Atlantic Committee entitled "A Global Strategy to Meet the Global Threat; A British Initiative" covering events outside the present NATO treaty area.
§ Mr. RifkindThe Government accept the need for a more coherent Western strategy designed to protect the 269W interests of the Alliance worldwide. We have continued to work within NATO and elsewhere to this end. but we doubt whether new institutional machinery, as recommended in the special working group's report, is necessary.
§ Mr. Eldon Griffithsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether, in accordance with the provisions of article 12 of the North Atlantic Treaty, he will propose a revision of the treaty, particularly in regard to the definition of the NATO geographical area and in the light of events outside that area which present a danger to the peace and security of the Western Alliance as a whole.
