HC Deb 14 June 1982 vol 25 c213W
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether arrangements are being made by Her Majesty's Government to give the Royal Navy an airborne early warning system.

Mr. Blaker

Land-based airborne early warning (AEW) cover already exists in the NATO area and will be considerably enhanced when Nimrod AEWs enter service in the mid-1980s. As my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence said in the House on 10 June 1982, urgent consideration is being given to measures designed to provide AEW cover for ships operating in the South Atlantic.
