§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for Social Services, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Wolverhampton, North-East on 26 April, Official 208W Report, c. 212, when he expects to receive the report of the research teams who are studying the costs and benefits of the current heart transplant programmes; what is the cost of this research; and if he will continue to fund the programmes at Harefield and Papworth hospitals in the meantime.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeInterim progress reports are expected in December 1982 and December 1983, and the final report early in 1985. The cost of the research study is estimated to be about £184,000. We have taken no decision at present to provide special funding for the heart transplant programme at either hospital.
