Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many widows are in receipt of pensions arising from the death or injury of their husbands on active service in (a) the First World War, (b) Northern Ireland since 1979 and (c) other overseas operations between 1946 and 1980.

Mr. Rossi

(a) 12,300 war widows' pensions as a result of service in the First World War are in payment by the Department.

(b) 51 war widows' pensions as a result of service in Northern Ireland have been awarded since 1979, but it is not possible to say how many of these are still in payment.
