HC Deb 08 June 1982 vol 25 cc57-8W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Defence when he expects to reach a decision on the fitting of point defence systems to classes of Royal Navy ships other than type 22 frigates.

Mr. Pattie

The Sea Wolf point defence system is being fitted to all type 22 frigates and to five Leander class frigates. The fitting of point defence systems to other classes of ships is still under consideration.

Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will estimate the cost of fitting point defence systems to classes of ships other than type 22 frigates, and the five Leanders in which installation is already proposed.

Mr. Pattie

The capital cost of providing a Sea Wolf point defence missile system for other classes of ship would vary between approximately £7 million and £16 million per ship, excluding ship fitting costs, depending on the particular configuration of system provided. Tine cost of other point defence systems varies widely according to type. The practicality of fitting point systems to other classes of ship is a different question.
