Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many private hospitals existed at the most recent date for which figures are available; how many beds they contained; if he will provide comparable figures for each of the previous 10 years; and how many of these hospitals enjoy charitable status.

The information requested is not held by the Department, but details provided by health authorities of premises in England registered under the Nursing Homes Act 1975 and providing acute medical and surgical care are as follows:
