HC Deb 08 June 1982 vol 25 cc38-9W
Sir David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how far the Health and Safety Executive makes use of live animals for research and product testing in connection with their duties; and how far this is essential to those duties.

Mr. Waddington

The Health and Safety Executive does not itself use live animals for research and product testing. It does, however, commission external research on occupational health matters, some of which necessarily involves the use of animals in experiments. The HSE has also commissioned some research directed at seeking ways to replace animal experiments with less time consuming in vitro methods.
