HC Deb 08 June 1982 vol 25 c75W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the number of European Economic Community nationals who entered and left the United Kingdom in the latest 12 month period for which figures are available.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The estimated numbers of European Community nationals—but excluding nationals of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic—who migrated to and from the United Kingdom during 1981 are:

Immigrants 9,000
Emigrants 11,000

An emigrant is defined as a person who, having resided for at least one year in the United Kingdom, intends to spend a year or more in another country; and vice versa for an immigrant. The estimates are derived from the international passenger survey, a voluntary sample survey of travellers at United Kingdom sea and air ports excluding routes to and from the Irish Republic.
